Pudinakhet Nature Reserve Hathipaon, Mussoorie Uttarakhand India
Not everyone is so lucky to have a nature reserve in their neighbourhood, but it is an advantage for me to have an estate in Mussoorie (which is a gift from my grandfather Lt shri C.P sharma ).
One of the hidden gems of Mussoorie, the wildlife sanctuary is a respite and an ideal getaway in the bliss of nature. Pudinakhet is privately owned and operated nature reserve in Uttarakhand.
At an elevation of approximately 2000 metres above the sea level, Nature Reserve is set around different altitudinal zones with an extensive variety of rare plants, insects, reptiles, animals, trees, birds and mammals.
It is located on the Mussoorie-HathiPaon road, around 8kms from the heart of the city, the nature park is spread over 50 acres of land. There are 4 well-demarcated routes for a walk in the estate amidst stunning natural tranquillity.
Above the first range of the Himalayas, it is a migratory flyway for many fivers as well as from rose finches to bar-headed geese (although these high-flying never go down and can only be heard honoring overhead Huh). I learned many lessons in this journey.
The Pudinakhet Nature Reserve has been privately owned and operated as a lover of nature who has taken care of his property with a purposeful eye to use his natural resources without toppling the forest. Having worked tirelessly over the past years to establish the reserve, even as he works full-time at the Pahadi house India Pvt Ltd and also look after his adventure company -Ravers expeditions, he has taken upon himself to protect the nature reserve's rich biodiversity and share it with others. Pudinakhet Nature Reserve (PNR) is unique as a model for conservancy on private land. Through an individual, one-time admission fee as well as a school field trip and research activities, the PNR aims to pay for itself, rather than an NGO that requests donations. The guards and naturalists overseeing the PNR are hired from villages and settlements near the reserve and this helps with community investment in the project. They are paid from money received from visitors, which also helps to cover the costs of maintaining nature trails and water voles. This innovative form of entrepreneurial protection has been tried and tested in many countries but it is the first of its kind in Uttarakhand, India.
In Pudinakhet Nature Reserve, guided tours are available for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. If you are seeking yet more adventure, you are free to pitch your tents. You can explore the Pudinakhet Nature Reserve from sunrise to sunset. 5 to 6 hours are mandated to visit the reserve. If you are visiting the Pudinakhet Nature Reserve, you are lucky to see winterline during the day incredible views of nature and animals to see. Thus, we can explore small areas of undeveloped private land, appreciate and value them and invest in something that enriches our lives, leaving behind indelible footprints.
